Description
This 'fancy iris' is one of the many iris hybrids that can be found in early June at the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Actually, one end is in Buckland across the Deerfield River. These two picturesque towns are nestled in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, not far off the famous Mohawk Trail.
The Bridge was a trolley bridge that fell into disuse when the automobile became the preferred means of transportation. By 1928 the bridge have become an overgrown eyesore - too expensive for the two small towns to tear it down. The Shelburne Falls Women's Club proposed turning it into a 'bridge of flowers' and the rest is history. Today, you can stroll the bridge and see flowers of incredible variety and color which, of course changes throughout the season. If you're in the area this is a stop that I highly recommend!
