Description
This photograph was taken at the Wellfleet Bay Audubon Sanctuary in Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The Bullfrog, or rana catesbeiana, is the largest frog in New England and can be found in all six New England states except northernmost Maine. A female can lay up to twenty thousand eggs and the tadpoles take one to three years to develop into adult frogs.
The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife sanctuary is one of the many Massachusetts Audubon Society Sanctuaries throughout the state. As its name implies, it's located on Wellfleet Bay, part of the much larger Cape Cod Bay. This sanctuary has a variety of habitats including forest, a fresh water spring, ponds, salt marsh and sandy beach. It's a very short distance from Route 6, the highway that runs from one end of the cape to the other, not far from the famous Wellfleet Drive-in, one of the last drive-in movie theaters in the country.
